To better understand the role of fillers and neuromodulators in facial rejuvenation, it is helpful to discuss the two different lines on the face and what causes each type.

Dynamic wrinkles and lines

“Dynamic” lines appear when the muscles of the face contract create facial expressions (for example, horizontal lines on the brow that occur when the eyebrows are raised). These occur because when muscles contract, the skin over them folds in motion. With repeated brow movements over time, these dynamic lines cause the other lines in the face: static lines.

Static wrinkles and lines

Static lines are the lines that appear on your face when you rest. A new book will have a smooth spine; when opened for the first time, lines only appear on the spine while it is open (the dynamic lines). Over time, however, the active lines on the spine of the book cause permanent lines on the spine of the book even when closed (static lines).

Neuromodulators: Smooth Dynamic Lines

Neuromodulators help to smooth dynamic lines. They work by carefully controlling the muscles in the area to minimize overlying wrinkle formation. Neuromodulators can be used to prevent static lines before they develop or in the earliest stages. Once static lines are present, however, it is tough, if not impossible, to treat them with neuromodulators.

Dermal Fillers: Smooth Static Lines | Add Volume

Fillers like Restylane are used to treat static lines and increase Volume. The fillers used in our practice are mainly gels, mainly different formulations of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in the body and can be placed to dramatically reduce its severity. Certain fillers can also be added to increase Volume in areas of the face that have become gaunt or appear sunken due to age or weight loss. Hyaluronic acid fillers can also be dissolved if necessary for any reason, and dermal filling injections can be reversed.
